Self Defense
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been proven to be one of the most effective martial arts on the planet.

Fitness

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an amazing full body workout.  The warm up, the drills and the rolling will literally leave you crawling off the mats at the end of class. Jiu Jitsu is engaging, fun, captivating and you can get in get shape all while learning a potentially life saving skill.

Patience

Jiu Jitsu takes time and is hard, no other way to put it.
Work hard, focus on getting a little bit better each day and mastering Jiu Jitsu will come in time. The ability to do Jiu Jitsu is the ability to be patient.

Being Apart of Our Community
Inspiration and motivation

In strong communities there is always someone doing something amazing, which can have the effect of inspiring you to go harder and achieve bigger goals.
At Gracie Owensboro we are always open to questions and want to help you in anyway we can. We have a great group of people that trains here that has the knowledge to help you grow and we want you learn every time you come in. We are social animals, we all love training, hanging out and having fun.

Escaping the Real World
Not a lot of explaining to this one needs to be done. I bet the 200 lbs. partner smashing that crap out of you will quickly make you forget everything else you were stressing about before you started training.

Self Esteem

With perseverance, dedication and focus you’ll be able to overcome the challenges of learning Jiu Jitsu.  You’ll feel empowered and soon you’ll feel in control of your thoughts and actions.  Learning Jiu Jitsu is learning how to overcome challenges.  Over coming challenges is the mortar for building your self esteem.

Problem Solving
You need to intelligent access the situation.  You need to constantly re-evaluate your efforts. You need to think with a clear head during real time struggles.   Jiu Jitsu teaches you a process to solve problems.  And BJJ teaches you that there’s an intelligent solution for ever problem even if the solution is tapping out.

Humility
There’s always someone smarter, better, faster and younger.  Know yourself and your limitations. There’s always more to learn no matter if you have 20 years in or just 2 days, We all can learn something from someone.

Learning

Studying and training BJJ will keep your brain quick, agile and young.  As well, learning is invigorating and confidence building.

Dealing with Failure
The more you fail, the more you learn, the more you learn the more you succeed.

Mat Etiquette
Trim your finger and toe nails.

Keep your gi/no-gi clothing clean.  Wash it after each class. (this is including your belt)

Slap hands with your training partner before rolling or drilling.

If you are caught in a submission, tap out.  Don’t risk injury because you were stubborn.  Leave your ego at the door.  When you tap, make sure you tap the person and not the floor.

No slamming.  If you are caught in a submission (triangle…arm bar) do not pick up your training partner to slam them so you can slip out.  This can cause serious harm to their neck and back…Just tap (re read #5)

When starting on the knees don’t midget wrestle the whole time.  Either pull them into your guard, push them into their guard, or quickly jockey for position or submission.  The whole match shouldn’t be spent wrestling from your knees.

When you are trying to escape submission and have to grab your training partners hand you must grab at least 3 or more fingers at a time.  Never grab just 1 finger.  You can break it pretty easily.

Higher belts have the right of way on the mats.  If you are rolling and about to bump into a higher belt rolling then just stop your match and move it where there is more space.

No swearing or bad sportsmanship.  If you lose a match, it will only help you get better.  Be thankful there are guys that can tap you out.

Tie your belt correctly.

If your instructor is having you roll with timed matches, do not stop rolling until the bell rings.  Push your cardio.  It will help you in the long run.

PARENTS!!!!!  As parents ourselves we know how hard it is not to cheer, coach and help your kids at everything they do. Just know we are teaching them how to defend themselves. So what they missed while you were trying to talk to them could be a small detail that could help them out of a potentially harmful situation. So we ask not only respect the Instructors but also your child's ability to learn, develop and sharpen all the other benefits listed above while they attend our classes.
